On June 10, 2025, the Detroit City Council unanimously honored Eye Care for Detroit with the prestigious Spirit of Detroit Award and presented founder Dr. Cleamon Moorer, Jr. with a Testimonial Resolution, permanently entering our mission into the city's official archives.
This historic recognition represents a collective achievement. We are deeply grateful to our dedicated team, supportive community partners, and the City of Detroit for making this moment possible.
The resolution's powerful language will forever remain in Detroit's public records:
"Councilwoman Angela Whitfield Calloway, the entire Detroit City Council, and all Detroiters hereby celebrate Dr. Cleamon Moorer, Jr. for his years of service, his groundbreaking accomplishments, and his continued dedication to serve the community."
A Unique Mission with National Impact
What makes this recognition particularly meaningful is that no other organization in the country is #deliveringvision the way Eye Care for Detroit does. Through our innovative approach—including mobile screening units, affordable $17 eyeglass programs, and strategic community partnerships—we're bringing accessible, quality eye care directly to more than 40,000 homebound #Detroiters.
From Personal Challenge to Community Solution
Dr. Moorer's journey from experiencing vision challenges at age 20 to receiving governmental recognition demonstrates how our greatest obstacles can become our most meaningful contributions to others.
A Shared Victory
This recognition belongs to everyone who has been part of our mission: every homebound Detroiter we serve, every partner who believed in our vision, and every supporter who helped build this movement.
Together, we're not just changing lives, we're making history!
